Summary:

We are seeking an in-house substitute teacher. Not on call. On staff. Full salary and benefits. You'll step into any classroom from JK to Grade 11 for a single period, a full day, a week, or an extended leave.

Our school serves students from JK to Grade 11 and follows the Ontario curriculum in English; no French is required. Students also learn Algonquin language and culture and participate in land-based learning.

Small class sizes mean you'll quickly get to know students across all grades, and this role can lead to a classroom of your own next school year. New graduate or seasoned teacher looking for a new challenge? We want to hear from you.

Long Point First Nation is a proud English-speaking Algonquin community in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Quebec. We're semi-remote, with year-round highway access, reliable internet, and cell service. Hospital and major amenities are 1 hr 45 min away in New Liskeard, Ontario.

Duties:

Core Teaching & Planning

  • Cover classes from JK to Grade 11 for single periods, full days, or extended leaves.
  • Teach from the plans left by classroom teachers, or from a bank of ready-to-go emergency coverage lessons you build in advance.
  • During longer-term coverage, take on the planning and teaching responsibilities of the classroom teacher.
  • Work collaboratively with educational assistants supporting students with IEPs.
  • Build a quick-reference binder of IEP accommodations across classes to maintain consistent support for students with IEPs during any coverage.
  • Bring in Algonquin culture and local context where there’s a natural link.
Classroom Culture & Management
  • Manage behavior aligned with each classroom's existing routines and expectations.
  • Report student safety or behavioral concerns directly to the principal.
  • Fulfill assigned supervision duties.
Assessment & Parent Communication
  • Take attendance for every class covered, including single periods or half days.
  • Leave a concise recap note after each coverage tracking what was accomplished, student behavior, and follow-up items.
  • During longer-term coverage, assess student progress and give feedback to students and parents. If coverage spans a reporting period, also complete report cards and conduct the parent-teacher interviews that follow.
School Community & Professional Duties
  • When no class coverage is needed, build your emergency lesson bank and IEP binder, and support teachers and students as assigned.
  • Contribute to school events and extracurricular activities.
  • Participate in staff meetings and professional development.
Mandatory Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Education degree or higher from an accredited university.
  • Valid teaching certification from a Canadian province or territory.
  • Ontario College of Teachers member, or willing to become one.
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada. We do not sponsor work permits.
Preferred Skills and Knowledge (Not Required):
  • Experience teaching First Nations students and knowledge of their culture.
  • Additional Qualification in Special Education (Part 1 or higher), or willing to obtain it.
  • Experience teaching, living, or working in a small, rural, or remote community.
  • Holds, or is willing to obtain, a licence to drive a 15-passenger van.
How to Apply:

Please note: Applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada. We do not sponsor work permits. A current, valid teaching certificate issued by a Canadian province or territory is required to apply.

To apply, email a cover letter and a resume with your full education and work history to Human Resources at hr@amoososwanschool.com. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Qualified Long Point First Nation members and First Nations candidates are encouraged to apply.

We appreciate your interest; however, only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
