INDIGENOUS COMMUNITY OUTREACH WORKER

2025/2026

1.0 FTE Term Certain

The Kamloops-Thompson School District is looking for energetic youth Community Outreach Workers that will provide services to Indigenous students living in Kamloops, Chase, Clearwater, Barriere and the surrounding communities within the school district. The successful applicant will serve the Kamloops, Chase or North Thompson areas. This position is effective September 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026.

Reporting to the District Principal-Indigenous Education, the Indigenous Community Outreach Worker is responsible for engaging with students, community groups, agencies, organizations and service providers with the purpose to support student attendance and student success. This successful applicant will be required to work flexible hours which include evenings and weekends to meet the needs of the youth and program.

This position will be filled by competition.

Responsibilities of the Indigenous Community Outreach Worker include:

•Support students who have been placed on flexible learning plans due to COVID-19.

•Provides assistance and support for the implementation of programs aimed at developing educational, social, emotional and behavioural needs of Indigenous students.

•Observes, monitors, records and provides feedback in areas identified as specific program goals.

•Tracks students' progress, performance and attendance as required to the appropriate teachers, counsellors, parents and bands.

•Arranges for parental consent for the passing of information to bands as required.

•Consults with counsellors concerning "at risk" students and assists with career preparation guidance and career counselling under teacher’s direction.

•Facilitates referrals to community support services, agencies and District alternative programs as required, as determined by the school-based team.

•Supervision of students when working with them.

•May participate in field trips and class activities/outings.

•Participates in home visits as determined by the Principal.

•Assists with implementation/reinforcement of behavioural expectations and appropriate conduct and provides positive behaviour/redirection, as outlined in the school plan.

•Participates in school based team and other consultative meetings as requested.

•Promotes cross cultural awareness and acts as a positive role model and advocate for Indigenous students in various areas including but not limited to career/life planning and transitions.


Qualifications:

•Grade 12 supplemented by a minimum of one (1) year post-secondary education in a related field, such as Child/Youth care worker.

•Two (2) years of proven previous work experience involving children with severe social, emotional and behavioural needs.

•Demonstrated experience with elementary and secondary students.

•Knowledge of First Nations, Metis and Inuit history, culture, values, knowledge of the historical and contemporary issues facing Indigenous families and communities.

•Valid BC Driver’s license.
