We invite applications for the temporary position of:

  • 1.0 FTE District Early Literacy Teacher With an Indigenous Cultural Safety Focus

We are seeking a compassionate and knowledgeable educator to lead early literacy initiatives district wide in a way that honours Indigenous worldviews, supports culturally responsive practices, and builds capacity in early literacy instruction. This role is grounded in respect, relationship, and reciprocity, and aims to uplift Indigenous learners through inclusive and strength-based approaches. This role will provide enhanced literacy support for primary school aged Indigenous students.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Advise and collaborate with district and school teams to design and implement effective supplemental learning and early intervention models that reflect diverse ways of knowing and being.
  • Coordinate District-wide structures and strategies that promote equitable access to early literacy supports, with attention to community voice and cultural relevance.
  • Engage in meaningful communication and collaboration with district personnel, regional networks, families, and Indigenous community partners to ensure shared ownership and culturally safe practices.
  • Support additional duties as needed, contributing to a district culture of learning, inclusion, and reconciliation.
  • Lead and support early literacy training for primary educators, grounded in culturally responsive pedagogy and inclusive assessment and instructional strategies.
  • Facilitate professional learning for educators, administrators, and support staff through workshops, collaborative planning, demonstration lessons, and co-teaching, with a focus on Indigenous cultural safety and holistic learning.
  • With district support, lead and support early literacy training for primary educators, grounded in culturally responsive pedagogy and inclusive assessment and instructional strategies.

The Ideal Candidate Will Bring:

  • Strong understanding of student-centred teaching, inclusive assessment, and culturally safe practices that honour Indigenous learners and communities.
  • Deep knowledge of early literacy pedagogy and child development, with successful experience in early literacy intervention.
  • Specialized certification or education in early literacy intervention (e.g., Reading Recovery Teacher Certificate or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated ability to build capacity among primary educators and support staff in literacy acquisition, while fostering collaborative systems of support and intervention.
  • Experience in curriculum implementation and collaborative planning, with a commitment to equity and reconciliation.
  • Willingness and ability to work across multiple schools/sites within the district, building relationships and supporting diverse learning environments.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous youth and communities.
  • Strong understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and educational strengths and challenges.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Knowledge of and respect for local protocols
  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, families, educators, and community partners.
  • Knowledge of academic tracking systems and student support strategies
  • Valid BC Teaching Certificate
  • Indigenous Ancestry required.
