The position is 1.0 PY (full-time position).

Located in the picturesque hamlet of Kugluktuk, Jimmy Hikok Ilihakvik Elementary School serves the community of Kugluktuk. The school has a population of approximately 212 students in a K-6 setting with a staff of 29. The school and community are steeped in a rich history of Inuit culture.

Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Education degree (Special Education Certificate/degree or equivalent courses)
  • Teaching certification acceptable for Nunavut teaching certificate
  • A minimum of three years teaching experience
  • Experience supervising staff (student support assistants) in programs supporting profound needs
  • Experience developing and implementing individual student support and behaviour plans in cooperation with classroom teachers
  • Language Component: Fluent in English and knowledge of Inuinnaqtun an asset

Desired qualifications:

  • Minimum of three years in the role of Special education/student support teacher
  • Experience in collaborative support to students in the effective implementation of formative assessment and differentiated instruction
  • Positive school environment approaches to classroom management (eg. Restitution, Tribes, Positive Effective Behaviour Supports)
  • Experience with Balanced Literacy Strategies
  • Experience in modeling and/or leading professional learning communities
  • Evidence/experience in developing and implementing individual education plans for students with exceptionalities in a collaborative context
  • Teaching experience in an ESL environment
  • Cross-cultural and/or northern teaching experience
  • Planning skills (lesson, theme, unit, year, and student support plans)
  • Effective communication skills

Please note: Subsidized housing is available but sharing may be required.

The salary for certified teachers ranges from $83,643 prorated/annum. to $131,151 prorated/annum.

The Northern Allowance for Kugluktuk is $22,042 prorated/annum.
