Windrem Elementary School requires a school leader who is authentic, innovative, and resilient. This principal will have a passion for impacting student achievement, school culture and a desire to work proactively with students, staff, parents, and the community, while honouring diversity and equity. This position will involve a teaching component.

Windrem Elementary School is a Kindergarten to Grade 7 school with approximately 40 students located in the community of Chetwynd. The school focuses on working together both with parents and the community to provide opportunities for students. The school operates on a continuous cycle of examining achievement data and putting tiered interventions in place to support all students.

School District No. 59 (Peace River South) is located in the beautiful Peace region of northeast British Columbia. We serve 3,600 students in 18 schools. The three major centers in the district are the communities of Dawson Creek, Chetwynd, and Tumbler Ridge. The district’s core business is ensuring a "Quality Education for each Student" with the core value of "Continuous Learning for All". IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE

ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's Degree in Educational Leadership, Administration or reflated field.
  • If not currently in possession of such a degree, the successful candidate must be willing to complete one within three years.
  • Must hold, or be eligible to hold, teaching certification in the province of British Columbia.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

  • Record of exemplary teaching at a variety of grade levels in more than one school.
  • School-based or district-wide leadership as a teacher and/or administrator.
  • Successful experience working with and implementing programs/interventions for students with diverse needs. Can provide examples of striving for equity for indigenous learners, students with complex needs, and any other identified student/group.

LEADERSHIP COMPETENCIES

  • Experience implementing academic, social-emotional, and behavioural supports and interventions that are appropriate to the needs of individual students.
  • Ability to foster, maintain and restore healthy relationships that promote a positive school climate and culture that is welcoming, honours diversity, is pro-active, and demonstrates a restorative approach to student discipline.
  • Demonstrates positive competencies in communication, collaboration, and teamwork. Values and promotes meaningful engagement with students, staff, parents, and community.
  • Demonstrated ability to improve measured student success within a context of implementing District strategic planning goals and directions.

MANAGEMENT COMPETENCIES

  • Proven experience and ability with analytical, organizational, problem solving, and decision-making skills to effectively handle a wide range of competing task and priorities, with a demonstrated commitment to excellent service delivery to all students.
  • Comfort with decentralized school budget management in alignment with District strategic plans and school growth plans.
  • Ability to de-escalate situations and promote positive solutions to problems. Able to navigate difficult conversations with all partners.

Windrem Elementary School

Windrem Elementary School is a student-centered Kindergarten to Grade 7 school centrally located in the beautiful small town of Chetwynd, BC. We offer House Team Events, a provincially funded after school program, and the nationally recognized Me to We Program, as well as other clubs and activities. We have an active Parent Advisory Committee that supports our ongoing programs and special events through volunteering and fundraising.

Our central location allows us access to programs at the Chetwynd Public Library, Chetwynd Recreation Centre and Chetwynd Secondary School. We are also within walking distance of various businesses which further gives us opportunities to interact with our vibrant community. Our extensive Chetwynd trail system runs along our expansive green space giving students and staff the chance to take part in outdoor activities.

Many of our staff are long time Chetwynd residents with a wealth of information about our local community. We also have staff who understand the challenges of relocating to a new community, or new province. There are many apartment buildings and private residences offering accommodation within walking distance of our school. Our grocery stores, restaurants, banks, and medical services are also within walking distance.

Desired qualifications and experience include:

  • Hold, or be qualified for, a valid BC Ministry of Education Teaching Certificate.
  • Experience with adapting, and modifying, curriculum to meet the needs of students.
  • Experience teaching primary and intermediate/middle school/secondary students.
  • Strong literacy and numeracy skills. Willingness to work and implement school initiatives and goals.
  • Capacity to work independently and in collaboration with a team.
  • Ability to use performance standards in the area of social responsibility.
  • Acquainted with the outcomes and evaluation processes outlined in the new curriculum.
  • Committed to individualized and group instruction utilizing a variety of effective strategies and techniques.
  • Experience teaching in a multiage group setting.
  • Strong classroom management skills.
  • Training in teaching ELL students.
  • Ability to work as part of a team to develop and implement individualized learning plans for students with academic, social and emotional learning difficulties.
  • Willingness to work in a collaborative model with staff on the school improvement plan.
  • Working knowledge of Criterion Based Referencing Assessment and Performance Based Assessment, and Balanced Literacy.
  • Experience working with students who display a variety of behaviours.

  • Relocation Allowance: Up to $2,000 for out of district applicants (with submission of approved receipts).
  • Northern Travel Allowance: A Great Benefit at Tax Time! An amount of up to $4,000 of the salary paid to the employee shall be designated as a Northern Allowance Travel benefit. This allowance shall be in effect within the guidelines of Revenue Canada as they exist and are changed by Revenue Canada from year to year and shall end when the Revenue Canada program ends. Regular part time employees’ allowance will be prorated proportionate to the hours worked.
  • Remote and Rural Allowance: Teachers working in School District No. 59 are eligible to receive a remote and rural allowance, which is both an adjustment to the salary grid and an annual allowance of approximately $2,519* per FTE. Teachers on call (TOCs) are not eligible to receive this allowance.
  • *The annual allowance may increase as defined within the Collective Agreement with the British Columbia Teachers Federation.
