SUMMER WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAM - JOB COACHES
FOR STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
(approximately 60 hours)

The Summer Work Experience program Job Coaches will support students with special needs in the duties and responsibilities of the summer work experience program. The Summer Work experience Job Coaches will enable teenagers and young adults with special needs to gain meaningful employment and contribute to their community. These positions will also raise community awareness and improve community attitudes towards providing opportunities for employment and interaction with individuals with special needs. The Job Coaches will create opportunities within a workplace environment for students to demonstrate and develop their employability skills, and gain meaningful work experience.
QUALIFICATIONS: • Recent and successful experience with students with special needs;
• The ability to work within a team.
CRITERIA FOR SELECTION: The candidates should possess the following skills:
• demonstrated experience and expertise with successful program implementation for students with special needs;
• knowledge of and ability with a broad range of Learning for All and Universal Design for Learning strategies;
• demonstrated experience and expertise in community partnerships supporting student with special needs;
• knowledge and facility in safe work environment procedures.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidates will fulfill responsibilities for the Summer Work Experience program for students with special needs.
Responsibilities include:
• work collaboratively with the Summer Work Experience team;
• collaboration with employers to determine appropriate job tasks, and effective accommodations as necessary;
• facilitate visits to workplace prior to employment, and monitor completion of orientation and safety awareness activities;
• supporting students in learning and accurately carrying out job responsibilities (with on-the-job training and support as necessary);
• on-going monitoring and support to employer and employee throughout placement;
• support (to the employee and employer) in addition to skills training can consist of advocacy, disability awareness-building, job adaptations, social support, and problem solving;
• facilitate evaluation/collection feedback from students and employers at end of summer on program success to inform and direct next steps.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: • demonstrate superior communication skills;
• ability to apply learning for all and universal design for learning strategies;
• flexibility, initiative and creativity;
• effective problem solving skills;
• ability to work with employers and promote safety for students;
• demonstrate a variety of leadership experiences and qualities;
• current knowledge of supporting student independence, and research and developments in this area;
• ability to travel between sites.
LOCATION: Mary Street Educational Centre with frequent travel within the Board. A current Ontario Driver’s license and access to a vehicle is required. Travel will be reimbursed in accordance with Administrative Procedure 404.
TERM: For July 2024 (dates to be confirmed).
