Teacher Counsellor

Full Time Probationary


The Teacher Counsellor will support the social and emotional learning of all students. Duties include providing personal, academic and career counselling services at the school level, supporting the Learning Support Team, liaising with outside agencies and service providers, and working directly with students, parents, school and district staff, including teachers.


Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Collaborating with parents, teaching staff, community agencies and the medical community.

  • Participating on various committees focused on community, division and school initiatives.

  • Demonstrated understanding of C.O.P.E and the S.I.S. process.

  • Crisis intervention at family and school level.

  • Shared Learning Support responsibilities.

  • Collaborate with teachers and education assistants to support programming needs of students.

  • Share with staff best practices of instruction for a variety of students.

  • Teaching individual and small groups of students.

  • Working cooperatively with psychologists, teachers, health therapists, medical agencies and other outside agencies to coordinate the delivery of required assessments and programming to ensure successful integration of students within the school.

  • Research and remain current with best practices within the area of counselling and social/emotional learning.

  • Establishment and implementation of a school guidance and counselling program that would involve an appropriate balance among professional school counselling services, the teacher as student advocate, and school inter-agency collaboration.

  • Collaboration in the development of Functional Behavioural Assessment for students.

  • Liaising with post secondary institutions and providing decision making support to students and families.

  • Advising students on post secondary options and applications.

  • Coordinating scholarship applications.

  • Collaborating with administration on transition planning.

  • Being a member of the school’s student support leadership team.

  • Ensuring student records in PASI are accurate and advising students, parents and administration on student graduation pathways.

  • Teaching duties as assigned by the administration.

  • Leading school based health and well-being initiatives.


Qualifications and Experience:


  • Current Alberta teaching certification (or be eligible).

  • 3 years of successful classroom teaching experience in Division III and/or IV.

  • Completion of a professional graduate level program related to school or counselling psychology including a practicum at the post Bachelor’s Degree. A Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology is preferred.

  • Strong communication and behaviour management skills.

  • Effectively work with a team of teachers, Education Assistants, service providers and outside agencies.

  • Understand and demonstrate the district mission and vision of whole child educational and instructional excellence.

  • Critical Incident and VTRA training would be an asset.

  • Experience with a variety of level B and C assessment instruments.

  • Have a familiarity with Alberta curriculum, course sequences, diploma and certificate requirements and alternative programming options at the high school level.

  • Have a familiarity with the Alberta Guide to Education and experience with assessment of out of province and out of country documents.

  • Experience working with English Language Learners and a familiarity with culturally appropriate approaches to mental health and wellness.

End Date: June 30, 2025
