THE OPPORTUNITY: ALTERNATE FORMAT PRODUCTION TECHNICIAN (TECHNICAL & RESOURCE SUPPORT C)


PROVINCIAL RESOURCE CENTRE FOR THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED (PRCVI)

The Provincial Resource Centre for the Visually Impaired is a Provincial Outreach Program funded by the Ministry of Education and Child Care, and hosted by the Vancouver School Board. PRCVI is charged with providing learning resources, leadership, information, training, and consultation to support BC school districts’ and independent schools’ goal of ensuring equitable access and enhanced educational opportunities for students with visual impairments including those with additional exceptionalities. In this position, you will:

  • Scan hard copy materials and add markup to create digital alternate format materials consistent with provisions in the Copyright Act of Canada related to access for students with perceptual disabilities
  • Remediate digital files to create STEM-focused (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) materials in digital alternate formats for students with perceptual disabilities via ARC-BC
  • Proofread electronic texts across a range of formats
  • Proofread and revises publishers electronic files for alternate format production
  • Collaborate with PRCVI outreach and alternate format production staff to develop and record accessible webinars and other professional learning opportunities delivered remotely
  • Support the production of 3D printed alternate format models by creating and producing tangible models to compliment digital alternate format content
  • Provide technical and resources support to the Division
  • Perform other work within the job band as assigned


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completion of grade 12 plus a minimum of two (2) years of post-secondary training in Media Production, Graphic Design, Programming or Information Studies and a minimum of four (4) years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Experience with digital accessible STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics) content production in MathML
  • Familiar with the basic principles of digital accessibility and alternate format production workflows, including PDF, EPUB, and e-Text formats
  • Proficiency in the practical application of OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software (e.g., ABBYY Fine Reader, OmniPage) and markup in Abode and Microsoft Office suites
  • Candidates must be able to lift, carry and maneuver heavy materials (minimum 10 kg.)

COMPENSATION

The salary for this position is $35.20/hour (paid as 7 hours/day) plus a comprehensive benefits package, including Municipal Pension Plan, Vancouver Employee Savings Plan, Extended Health, Dental, Group Life, Long Term Disability, Vacation, & Gratuity Days.
