Reporting to the Director, Operations & Technology, this is responsible for the technical operations of all campus productions, concerts and events. As well as managing the theater facility.

This role is based in-person from 8:00am - 4:30pm, but could vary from time to time to support the operational needs of the School (evening and weekend work required).

This position is not eligible for remote work.

Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the technical operations of all CHS productions, concerts, rehearsals, assemblies, guest lectures, and other community events in the Theatre, drama studio, Manrell Hall, and other locations as required
  • Establish operating policies and guidelines for the safe use of the school's theatre facilities and performance spaces, and proactively communicate and implement these to students, teachers and staff
  • Program and operate theatrical lighting, sound, and video systems in the theatre and drama studio
  • Live stream and/or create video and audio recordings of events when requested
  • Setup temporary AV systems around campus (sports days, outdoor band performances, etc)
  • Facilitate live translation services as requested
  • Participate in bi-weekly whole school operations meetings, and assist in the planning of school events
  • Perform regular maintenance and repairs on theatre equipment
  • Coordinate the movement of choir risers, acoustic shells, and the grand piano on and off stage to accommodate the different needs of performance groups and classes
  • Train, schedule, and supervise our student tech crew in the areas of lighting, sound, projection, stage management, and backstage safety
  • Train staff and teachers on the use of theatre and AV equipment as required
  • Responsible, in conjunction with the IT department, for the AV systems in Manrell Hall, the junior and senior school gyms, and the junior school atrium, as these are frequently used as event and performance venues
  • Oversee the Theatre and Foyer calendars, which include class schedules and event bookings, and find solutions to schedule conflicts; this involves daily communication with teachers and staff, as these spaces are in high demand
  • Provide AV support and facility supervision/management for rental events in the theatre and other Crofton venues as required
  • Support the IT department with AV related tickets when required
  • Produce two senior school theatre productions each year:
  • Grade 8-9 production in the drama studio
  • Grade 10-12 production in the theatre
  • Participate in the play selection process, taking into consideration technical demands and costs
  • Secure performance rights and the delivery of production materials from licensing agencies
  • Facilitate the design, technical, and logistical aspects of each production, including scenery, rigging, props, costumes, lighting, sound, and projection
  • Create production budgets
  • Hire technical, construction, and design specialists to assist on larger productions
  • Oversee teacher co-curricular involvement in the productions, including scheduling and training (tickets, front of house, posters, etc)
  • Lead bi-weekly production meetings
  • Create detailed production schedules

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum 1+ years working in a theatre technician capacity
  • Bachelor's Degree in Theatre production, IT or equivalent years of experience an asset

Skills/Competences:

  • Oversee production technical requirements
  • Schedule productions and theater availability
  • Provide A/V technical support for teachers and staff and school events
  • Train and teach students and staff on theatre production and stagecraft
  • Oversee production initiatives and ensures safe operation of equipment
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Proactive and flexible, self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Flexible with the ability to adjust to changing priorities and schedules

  • Experience working with youth an asset
  • Expertise with lighting, sound, rigging and production
  • Strong working knowledge in the operation of digital control boards, sound boards and routing systems

Experience with the following would be an asset:

  • ETC lighting consoles
  • LED and conventional lighting fixtures
  • Yamaha digital sound consoles
  • Live audio mixing, particularly for musical theatre
  • Dante and NDI network protocols
  • Scenic carpentry and rigging
  • Video production

Compensation: $60,000 - $68,000 depending on experience
