40 hours per week

POSITION S UMMARY:

The HVAC Technician will respond to repairs and maintenance needs of the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems and associated controls. Perform service, maintenance and other duties as assigned related to the repair and operation of the Board’s buildings, equipment and sites.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ability to work as a team player with excellent interpersonal skills; capable of working under various levels of supervision, with other departments and other maintenance personnel (whether the board’s or contracted)
  • Ability to prioritize the order in which work orders are completed
  • Must work with sensitivity to the educational environment within the Board
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision and to be competent in the use and care of tools and equipment common to the trade
  • Keen problem-solving abilities in determining effective, efficient solutions and implementing appropriate courses of action

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Successful completion of an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, preferably in a technical program
  • The applicant must also possess at least two of the following:
    • Gas Technician G1 or G2 with the intention of getting a G1
    • Journeyman status as a refrigeration/AC
    • Successful completion of a 2 year course and a College Certificate as an HVAC Technician
    • Certification as an electronics/pneumatic technician and/or instrumentation technician plus a minimum of three years related and recent experience as an HVAC technician/specialist in an industrial, commercial or large institutional facility.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Minimum of four experience in heating, air-conditioning and energy management in Direct Digital Control Systems, two of which were spent in commercial HVAC
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of a wide variety of trade related and maintenance tools/ equipment
  • Knowledge of associated government codes and demonstrated ability to work within those laws and guidelines
  • Must be physically fit, capable of performing a variety of maintenance tasks that will require the use of hard hat, respirators, safety belts, safety footwear, and other personal protective equipment as required
  • Must be capable of heavy lifting and other strenuous physical activity such as kneeling; climbing ladders; working on the back, sides and above shoulder for extended periods of time; working in confined spaces; working on scaffolds, lifts or elevated equipment and in areas where excessive cold or heat may occur, or in adverse weather conditions
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of HVAC maintenance and repair, hazard and safety practices common to the trade
  • Knowledge of electrical circuits and control systems as they relate to air-conditioning, heating, ventilation, and control systems
  • Knowledge of sheet metal, electrical, plumbing, and other general mechanical maintenance
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings and blueprints to perform the essential requirements of the job
  • Knowledge of asbestos abatement practices and applicable legislation
  • Good analytical skills are required to troubleshot and problem solve
  • Working knowledge of WHMIS and OH&S Act
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Work fluently with personal computers, with experience and ability in the use of email, internet and Microsoft Office

ASSETS:

  • Knowledge of DDC Control Systems (preferably Siemens)
  • Knowledge of Hydronic systems and control
  • Knowledge of computerized databases and work order systems
  • Journeyman status as a plumber, electrician

CONDITIONS:

  • Must possess a class “G” driver’s license and produce a current clean driver’s abstract record
  • Must be reliable, dependable and have a good attendance record
  • All required licenses must be maintained in an active status without suspension or revocation throughout employment
  • Must provide all required clearances including a police background check
