Counsellor, International Education Office (0.6 FTE)

Reporting to the Managing Director, International Education, the International Student Counsellor develops, implements, and provides services to support students enrolled in the district's International Student Program. The District International Student Counsellor works collaboratively with the International Education Office team and other district and school staff to support international students' academic success, progress to post-secondary, and wellbeing.

Role and Duties:

  • Initiates, develops, and oversees services to support international secondary students' academic success and progression to post-secondary in Canada and the United States.
  • Acts as a resource for international students about post-secondary in Canada and the United States, the admissions process, trends, procedures, scholarships, and testing.
  • Delivers post-secondary admission and scholarship workshops for international students, parents, and custodians; coordinates events and campus tours, and other services to support student admission to post-secondary, e.g. IELTs workshops.
  • Supports International Education and school staff in assessing and managing student issues.
  • For newly enrolled international students conducts academic transfer credit evaluations, acts as a counselling resource to ensure a successful school start, and supports the delivery of new student orientations.
  • Develops and maintains tracking systems to support and report on student success. (e.g. graduation, post-secondary acceptances, scholarships);
  • Supports the District's International Student Assistant team.
  • Other projects as assigned by the Managing Director, International Education.
  • Must effectively manage multiple priorities and be available to work flexible hours.

Qualifications:

  • Current valid B.C. Teaching Certificate
  • Master's Degree Counselling or Counselling Psychology
  • A minimum of two (2) years counselling experience within a school and/or community setting, working with a culturally diverse population and a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Experience in supporting secondary age students.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and carry out programming, services, workshops, and events to assist youth.
  • Extensive knowledge of B.C. graduation program and equivalency, challenge, and external credential policies.
  • Extensive experience in supporting students' progression to post-secondary education.
  • Knowledge of Behavior and Mental Health Disorders and their associated treatments.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct risk assessments and provide treatment planning for children and youth with complex mental health.
  • Knowledge of working with a trauma informed practice framework.
  • Demonstrated ability to adjust to new or unexpected events (crisis management).
  • Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, and intercultural skills with proven ability to liaise with diverse groups.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team as well as independently with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency with computer applications
  • Demonstrated appreciation of the challenges of studying and living abroad.
  • Valid BC Driver's License. Local area travel may require the use of a personal vehicle.
