School District No. 52 (Prince Rupert) is located within traditional Ts’msyen Territory on the beautiful north coast of B.C. and services the small communities of Hartley Bay and Port Edward in addition to the City of Prince Rupert. Currently we have one secondary school, one middle school, five elementary schools, one store-front site and one “on reserve” school (Hartley Bay, K-12). Our student population is approximately 1,800 students, 64% of which are Indigenous. School District No. 52 is an exhilarating place to work where new ideas and opportunities are embraced. School District 52 has the following opportunity:

1. Continuing, full time (1.0 f.t.e.) effective September 1, 2024. Initial assignment as the District Aboriginal Middle/Secondary Helping Teacher.

Necessary qualifications include:

  • Bachelor of Education (middle or secondary) or equivalent academic qualification;
  • Recent successful experience at middle and/or secondary level;
  • Willingness to work and collaborate as part of a team to coordinate and develop initiatives at the middle and secondary level;
  • Demonstrated recent and successful experience leading and planning workshops and events;
  • Willingness to support Indigenous Learners success, Indigenous understanding across the curriculum and emotional learning/self-regulation of Aboriginal Learners;
  • Strong interpersonal skills;
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a dynamic team using effective time management skills;
  • Strong proficiency with computer-based programs for archiving, documenting, and communicating
  • The ability to understand the budget process;
  • Willingness to work flexible hours;
  • Willingness to travel to Hartley Bay School and Metlakatla;
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to work collaboratively with a wide variety of community partners such as Aboriginal Education Partners and Northwest Community College, etc;
  • Demonstrated understanding of and willingness to promote collaborative planning and teaching;
  • Appropriate background and experience in Inquiry Based Learning;
  • Support for English First People's courses, Aboriginal Entrepreneurship, First Nations Art Courses, Sm'algyax Language Programs and First Nations Studies course;
  • Understanding of the math and science curriculum in order to implement Aboriginal Education;
  • Access to a Vehicle and valid driver's license;
  • Willingness to take part in and present at regional and provincial initiatives, such as NOIIE, FNESC, Social Cultural Identity Initiative and family workshops, etc.
Note: This position is funded through the Aboriginal 1.31 budget. As per Section 42 of the BC Human Rights Code, preference will be given to qualified teachers of aboriginal ancestry.

  • a certificate of qualification issued under the Teachers Act;

  • a thorough knowledge and understanding of local Indigenous culture, history and communities;
  • willingness to integrate appropriate Indigenous content and resources into educational programs;
  • excellent interpersonal skills;
  • demonstrated strong classroom management skills;
  • willingness to integrate appropriate technologies into educational programs;
  • the demonstrated ability to work co-operatively with teaching and non-teaching staff and parents/guardians;
  • be willing to work collaboratively on a team that is committed to the principles of a learner-focused education system;
  • willingness to work collaboratively toward improving student achievement by actively supporting the strategies and structures in the School Improvement Plans, the District (Aboriginal Education) Partnership Agreement, and the District Framework for Enhancing Student Learning (formerly known as the Achievement Plan)
