Casual Educational Assistant

C.U.P.E. 2357

Why Work With The Ottawa Catholic School Board:  The Ottawa Catholic School Board (OCSB) is located in Ottawa, Ontario. As Canada’s capital city, Ottawa ranks among the world's most desirable cities to call home. We have a small-town feel with a big-city presence and a population of just over a million people.

The OCSB proudly serves over 40,000 students in 84 schools. We offer an education that respects all faiths' universal values and is grounded in Catholic principles. We foster innovation to inspire Deep Learning so that all can realize their full potential. We offer a collaborative work environment, fulfilling careers, and the opportunity to make a difference in our students' lives. The OCSB adheres to equitable hiring, employment and promotion practices and is committed to an inclusive workforce that reflects the diversity of our students.

Description:  The Educational Assistant is hired as a support staff to a classroom where there is a child with specific needs to be met (developmentally delayed, physically handicapped, deaf, blind, or experiencing behaviour/social/medical problems), or a special education classroom (social adjustment, communication, learning disability). Consequently, each assignment will be different. However, in a global and generic sense, the Educational Assistant provides support in the students’ academic development; responds to the students’ physical, emotional and hygienic needs; acts as a team member of the school in any area which may directly assist the assigned student(s), or may contribute to the educational program as a whole; and performs other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications:  The ideal candidate will have a secondary school diploma; a 2 year Community college diploma in a related field (ex. DSW, CYCW - ECE's are not eligible); 2 years of related experience. Knowledge of PICS, PECS, ABA, signing, Braille, special feeding techniques, CPR/First Aid, CPI (NVCI) and Diabetic Monitoring would be considered assets. The incumbent should have initiative, oral and written communication skills and the ability to establish a rapport with children. Individuals who possess an equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.

Status: Supply Educational Assistants must be available to work on call during regular school hours.

Salary: Hourly wage of $26.98 plus 4% in lieu of vacation pay
