Kitchen Helper (Term)

Position Status: Full-time Term until approximately November 1, 2024
Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, 7.5 hours daily between the hours of 7:00 am and 3:00 pm (37.5 hours per week)
Salary: $17.81 per hour + 6% in lieu of vacation
Under the direction of the Chef/Food Services Manager/Cafeteria Supervisor/Assistant Chef, the Kitchen Helper carries out a variety of duties to maintain the kitchen work areas, equipment, utensils and storage areas; assist with the preparation and serving of food as directed; assist with the supervision of students.
- Knowledge of specifications for industry food products and practices,
and commercial food preparation, as well as health and safety acts
and regulations;
- Ability to operate/maintain slicer, buffalo chopper, grinder, grill,
grater, ovens including convection, deep fryer, steam table, gas
stove, floor mixer, pressure cooker, blenders, variety of butcher
knives, dishwasher;
- Interpersonal and communication skills using tact and diplomacy
to train/monitor/motivate/coach students and mentor in the safe
and proper use of kitchen equipment, proper hygiene and food
preparation;
- Report student problems to the classroom teacher when necessary;
- Respond with tact and diplomacy to client needs, explain processes,
relevant regulations;
- Assist the classroom teacher with kitchen equipment and food
inventories, communicating with suppliers;
- Organizational skills to prioritize multiple tasks, plan activities,
meet daily deadlines; mathematical skills related to money to accept
cash and give change;
- Competency in learning how to use equipment related to electronic
payment for purchases including debit and credit;
- Assist with inventory and ordering of food supplies as directed with
associated food service providers.
- This knowledge is acquired through successful completion of secondary
school diploma specializing in culinary arts with a minimum of one year of
relevant experience.
